Headache at Headingley

Nottingham Rugby went down 30-19 against Leeds Carnegie at Headingley after giving their opponents a 20-0 half time lead.

The Green and Whites deserve credit for the way they came back in the second half, scoring tries through Brent Wilson, Sean Romans and Ryan Hough.  However, they weren't in the game after their first half showing.

Nottingham lost nine of their own lineouts in the match and were second best to every ball.  Poor discipline didn't help as penalties allowed Leeds to gain much needed territory.

The Green and Whites showed what they can do in that second half showing, but again they were punished for giving teams a head start.

Nottingham slipped to third from bottom in the Championship table thanks to a 30-19 defeat at Leeds Carnegie.

For Leeds it was revenge for their opening day loss against the Green and Whites, and they were well worth the points.

Nottingham struggled for long periods at Headingley particularly at the lineout, which saw them lose an alarming amount of ball.

They improved over the course of the second half to force a couple of tries that suggested they may be able to make a fight of it, but a late try from Leeds ended any hopes of that fightback producing a win.

An impressive first half from Leeds saw them open up a 20-nil lead by the break, and it could have been more but for the Television Match Official.
The home side created a couple of good early chances, sandwiched either side of an injury that robbed them of skipper Jacob Rowan, before they took the lead with a penalty from Glyn Hughes.

The opening try soon followed as they moved the ball quickly down their line to create space for David Doherty to cross, Hughes making it 10-nil with the conversion.

James Currie then forced his way over form close range, Hughes again converting, and within minutes they had a try ruled out by the TMO.

Leeds were in full control of possession and finished the half with a second penalty form Hughes to make it 20-nil at the break.

The Leeds pack drove Richard Beck over in the early minutes of the second half but Hughes was off-target this time.

As Nottingham began to get more into the game as the second half wore on they finally got their first points on the board with a try from skipper Brent Wilson, although it took the TMO to judge whether or not he had grounded the ball.

Rory Lynn added the conversion to make it 25-7.

With Nottingham now starting to put a few good passages together they got a second try fifteen minutes form time through Sean Romans, Lynn making it 25-14 with the conversion.

But Leeds ended any hopes of a winning fightback with the bonus point try late in the game, Hughes again missing the conversion.

Both sides then lost a man to the sin-bin as Tom Calladine and Stevie McColl were shown yellow cards.

And it was Nottingham who completed the scoring as winger Ryan Hough touched down in the corner, and again it took the TMO to confirm the score.
