Loughborough 18-33 Nottingham Rugby

By Andi Starr

Another dominant display from the forwards saw Nottingham defeat Loughborough 33-18 in their final warm up game ahead of the new season.

With Brent Wilson, Tom Calladine and David Jackson all absent, it was Andy Savage who led the side out, and he grabbed the opening try as the Nottingham backs put together what proved to be a piece of flowing rugby and  enjoyed a big advantage in terms of possession.

A second try, from former Loughborough student Joe Burton, gave them a 12-nil lead midway through the first half.

With Nottingham dominating possession a big win looked likely at that stage, but some impressive defence and determination kept the students in contention, and a late penalty from George Eastwell, quickly followed by an unconverted try from full back Alex Davis, made it 12-8 at the break.

A second penalty in the opening minutes of the second half brought Loughborough back to within a point, but it was Nottingham who continued to get the better possession.

They soon forced a penalty try to make it 19-11, and went on to add another couple before the students broke away to send winger Jack Pons clear in the final move of the game.
