Captain Wilson scoops major Nottingham Rugby awards

NOTTINGHAM Rugby captain Brent Wilson says he was stunned to collect the top two honours at the club's annual awards night on Saturday.

Wilson, who took over captaincy of the Green and Whites this season, was named the Neil Hannah Player of the Year for 2012/13 and was voted Players' Player of the Year for a second time in as many years.

He beat lock Nic Rouse, centre Tim Streather and winger Rhys Crane for the top gong. Both Rouse and Streather also featured in the top three of the players' vote.

In his second season with the Meadow Lane club, Wilson has epitomised the club's rise-and-rise as an RFU Championship force with his no-nonsense approach to the game and commitment to success.

With 13 tries in all competitions, the flanker also finished the regular season as the play-off-bound club's leading try scorer.

Still, Wilson was humbled to receive so much praise at the Green and Whites Ball at the Nottingham Crowne Plaza.

The captain said: "I feel shocked to get these awards.

"This season has been one in which a lot of players have performed really well, it has been a huge privilege being captain of this side.

"There are some awesome players stepping up for us."

One of those players to step up this season under head coach Martin Haag is Joe Munro, 22, who was named Nottingham's Young Player of the Year.

The centre has been a key figure in his second season with the East Midlands outfit, starting 21 regular season league matches.

In other awards, winger Alex Lewington's try against Plymouth at Meadow Lane was judged best of the season. Two of Lewington's tries were nominated in a strong field, which included stunning team tries finished by Rouse, Andrew Savage and Rhys Crane.

Meanwhile, Rupert Cooper took out the Tony Butcher Community Award and Scunthorpe's Jake Barron was named Nottingham Rugby's Community Player of the Year.
