Nottingham Squad Confirmed for 2013/14 Season

Nottingham Rugby have finalised their squad for the upcoming Greene King IPA Championship season which gets underway on Saturday 14th September with the Greene King IPA Big Rugby Weekend.

The Green and Whites will be relying on a tightly-knit squad as they look to build on their second place finish in the league and play-off semi final appearance of last season.

Following the departures of several members of the squad through retirement or transfer at the end of last season, Nottingham have brought in like for like replacements in the key areas of the team with the focus on young, promising talents who already have experience under their belts.

New signings Jon Vickers (Hooker), Campese Ma'afu (Prop), Nelius Keogh (Lock) and Matt Jarvis (Fly Half) have been put through their paces with the rest of the squad by Strength and Conditioning coach Jo Brun as they look to be in the optimum physical condition for the season ahead.

Chief Executive Simon Beatham said, "There's a new spine to the team and I'm really excited by the prospect of seeing what they can do.

"It was probably the right time for those players that have left to move on and these new ones have got a fresh perspective and will bring in that ambition and will help shape the team for this year.

"The king is dead, long live the king!"

Beatham has ruled out more new signings for the upcoming season because the club has drastically cut its budget, apart from dual-registered players and student players to reinforce the squad.

"There will be some new players coming in, but they will be additions to the squad, that's the best way to describe it, with a mixture of dual-registered players and students," he added.

It means Haag is going to have to work with a smaller squad, having led the Greens to their highest-ever finish in the Championship of second place and into the play-off semi-finals last season.

"This coming season all the key players that have gone we've replaced with ones we believe will be as good," said Beatham.

"The profile has changed, so they are younger players, but they are very ambitious.

"The reason they have come here is because Nottingham has a fantastic reputation so they have come to prove themselves.

"Martin has worked really hard on the recruitment side and his reputation as a coach is very high.

"We just haven't got the numbers, so we're a little reliant on not getting too many injuries, but I would take our team against any side in the Championship.

"Our depth of squad isn't quite as good as it has been previously, but the team is as good as it was last year, if not better.

"We will absolutely be competitive, we just haven't got that depth of squad and you get injuries in rugby so that is out of our control if you like.

"The calibre of our core group is as good as it was last year."

To celebrate the successful completion of the first stage of their preparations, the players enjoyed a barbeque with Harvest Pale Ale, supplied by Castle Rock Brewery.

The players are now enjoying a well deserved 'rest-week' before getting back into pre-season where the introduction of a rugby ball will be welcomed by all.
