Nottingham Rugby are delighted to congratulate former Green and White forward Archie van der Flier on his call-up to the England XV squad ahead of this week’s fixture against France XV in Vannes.
For everyone connected with Nottingham Rugby, Archie’s recognition at national level is a hugely proud moment. It is another marker in the rise of a player who made a significant impression during his time at The Bay, developing in the Championship and showing the work-rate, appetite and character that have now taken him into the England environment.
Archie joined Nottingham as a young front-row forward with plenty of potential, and quickly became a popular figure among teammates, coaches and supporters. In the Green and White, he brought energy, physicality and a willingness to learn every week. His performances in the Championship gave him the platform to test himself against experienced packs, sharpen his game and continue building the foundations of a promising professional career.
That progress was recognised at the end of the 2023/24 campaign when Archie was named Nottingham Rugby’s Young Player of the Season. It was a well-earned award after a season in which he consistently demonstrated the qualities we value as a club: resilience, humility, competitiveness and a commitment to improving. Whether in training or on matchday, Archie approached his rugby with the kind of attitude that makes people sit up and take notice.
His development with Nottingham also played an important part in his journey with Leicester Tigers. Having impressed in the Championship, Archie continued his progression with Tigers, earning senior opportunities and building further experience at Premiership level. His call-up to the England XV squad is a brilliant reward for that hard work and a reminder of the important role Championship rugby plays in developing players capable of stepping into elite environments.
At Nottingham, we take great pride in seeing players move forward and make the most of their opportunities. Archie’s story is one that reflects the strength of the rugby pathway, the value of meaningful game time and the impact of a player who was prepared to work for everything he has achieved.
For our supporters, Archie will be remembered not only for his performances, but for the way he carried himself during his time with the club. He embraced the challenge of Championship rugby, grew with every appearance and left a lasting impression on those who worked with him. Seeing him now earn recognition with England XV is something everyone at Nottingham Rugby can celebrate.
On behalf of the players, staff, volunteers and supporters at Nottingham Rugby, we would like to say a huge congratulations to Archie.
Once an Archer, always an Archer. HWGB.
We look forward to watching the next step in his journey.
