Nottingham Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Matt Gallagher, a much-loved member of our club and the wider rugby community.
Matt was a valued part of the Nottingham Rugby family during his time at the club, remembered not only for his contribution on the field but also for the character, warmth and camaraderie he brought to the dressing room and the wider community around the club. Those who played alongside him and those who supported him from the stands will remember a committed and passionate player who represented Nottingham with pride.
Matt also had strong ties with Coventry, another club close to his heart, and it was through these shared connections that the Matt Gallagher Cup was established. The annual fixture between Nottingham and Coventry stands as a lasting tribute to Matt’s contribution to both clubs and to the spirit in which he played the game.
In recent years, Matt faced his diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease with extraordinary courage and determination. Throughout his battle with MND, he remained an inspiration to so many within the rugby world and beyond, raising awareness of the condition and showing remarkable strength in the face of immense challenges. The support he received from the rugby community reflected the high regard in which he was held and the lasting impact he had on those around him.
The Matt Gallagher Cup continues to be an important occasion for both clubs and their supporters, providing an opportunity to celebrate Matt’s life, his love for the game and the friendships he formed through rugby. This year’s match will take place at Nottingham on Friday 10 April, where players and supporters from both sides will once again come together to honour his memory.
Everyone at Nottingham Rugby sends their sincere condolences to Matt’s family, friends, and all those connected with Coventry Rugby. Matt will always remain part of the Nottingham Rugby story, and his legacy will live on through the Matt Gallagher Cup and through the many people whose lives he touched throughout his rugby journey.
