Nottingham progressed to the semi-final of the Championship Cup after a 15-0 victory over Doncaster Knights at The Bay.

The swirling wind made it difficult for either teams to get going in the game, but a penalty just before half time followed by two tries in the second half was enough for Nottingham to advance to the next round.

Neil Fowkes said: “It was played in atrocious conditions and wan an arm wrestle for the first 40 then we took our chances. It was a brilliant line by Will Simonds and then a good bit of skill from Luke Cole.

“I’m really pleased and proud of the boys that they came out on the right side of that because I’m sure Doncaster would have been rubbing their hands after looking at the forecast.”

Nottingham denied the opposition any points for the third time in total this season, and Head Coach Neil Fowkes singled out Oisin Heffernan for his performance.

He said: “The defence was cracking. I don’t usually single people out but I thought Oisin Heffernan was outstanding tonight. He played 80 minutes at tight-head with three or four turn-overs, he was really good tonight.”

Alex Dolly picked up an injury just before half time and was replaced by NTU student Alex Crocker at the break.

“It’s too early to tell but it looks like it could be a hamstring, we’ll assess it in the week,” said Fowkes. He added: “Alex was fantastic when he came on. It was tough conditions for a nine, never mind a nine that played 80 minutes on Wednesday night for Nottingham Trent Uni. He equipped himself very well and that pass for Will Simonds’ try was a very good one, so I’m really pleased for him.”
