Nottingham got off to a flyer in the Championship Cup last night after an emphatic 83-0 victory over Yorkshire Carnegie, but Head Coach Neil Fowkes says his team still have some aspects to work on to continue to improve.

He said: “We’re pleased with a fair few aspects of that and it was good to get our first game under our belts. Look, there are a few bits we need to work on, we were a little bit disappointed with that back end of the first half – we felt we dropped off and we could have kept our foot on the gas a bit more.”

Yorkshire pushed Nottingham to the try line in the final couple of minutes, but they defended well to counter attack and go down the other end and score a try of their own. Fowkes says the clean sheet was one of the most pleasing aspects of the night.

“It was really pleasing at the end because Leeds threw everything at us on the try line and the boys hung in there and fought through so that was pleasing,” said Fowkes. He added: “I think that was the most pleasing aspect for us there to not concede. The boys stuck in there and it was really tough at the end. They threw everything at us that last five minutes and the boys stuck at it.”

The Green N Whites will now face London Scottish, again in the Championship Cup on Saturday 28th September.

Talking about the next game, Neil Fowkes said: “I think next week going down to play London Scottish will be a really good test for us and hopefully the rest of the squad will get a run out down there.

“We didn’t turn up when we played there in the league last season so we spoke about that just now that we need to flick over in to that mode now and get ready for them next week.”
